چکیده
The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) was completed, on budget, in November 2005, in just under 6 years, and is currently in the middle of its commissioning and performance verification phase, expected to be concluded by early 2007. SALT partners have already been obtaining observations during this shake-down period, and night time hours devoted to science time has slowly risen to 65-75%. Already some scientific results have been obtained and the first SALT science paper accepted for publication. SALT promises to be ideally suited to many survey follow-up programs and indeed for surveys of its own, for which observational cosmology will definitely

Optical Design and Fabrication for an Extremely Large Telescope
Three large segmented-mirror telescopes already exist -Keck I, Keck II and Hobby Eberly. Others are in work or have been proposed, including the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC), the Large Aperture MultiObject Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), the Mexican Infrared-Optical Telescope (TIM) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). These projects serve as the starting point for the design of ...
متن کاملIV. Redshifts Obtained with MEFOS
As part of our efforts to unveil extragalactic large-scale structures behind the southern Milky Way, we here present redshifts for 764 galaxies in the Hydra/Antlia, Crux and Great Attractor region (266◦ ≤ l ≤ 338◦, | b | ∼ 10 ◦), obtained with the Meudon-ESO Fibre Object Spectrograph (MEFOS) at the 3.6-m telescope of ESO. The observations are part of a redshift survey of partially obscured gala...
متن کاملThe Effect of South African Geopolitical Position in the Development of Cinema in South Africa
This paper will discuss about the role of the geopolitical location of South Africa in the development of movie and the cinema industry in this country. Despite of bringing ci-nema to South Africa by white Europeans, but the development of this phenomenon is mostly due to the geopolitical position of this country. It is interesting to know that ci-nema reached Africa in much the same time as it...
متن کاملModeling the Vst Telescope and the Effect of the Wind Disturbance on Its Performance
The VST (VLT Survey Telescope) is a 2.6 m class Alt-Az telescope to be installed at Mount Paranal in Chile, in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site. The VST is a wide-field imaging facility planned to supply databases for the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) science and carry out stand-alone observations in the UV to I spectral range. So far no telescope has been dedicated entirely to sur...
متن کاملSouthern Cosmology Survey I: Optical Cluster Detections and Predictions for the Southern Common-area Millimeter-wave Experiments
We present first results from the Southern Cosmology Survey, a new multiwavelength survey of the southern sky coordinated with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), a recently commissioned ground-based mm-band Cosmic Microwave Background experiment. This article presents a full analysis of archival optical multi-band imaging data covering an 8 square degree region near right ascension 23 hours...
